The letters of the alphabet (lower case, cursive) cut out and mounted on a separate thick card of masonite). The consonants are mounted on red cards and the vowels on blue.
Preparatory Exercise:
1 .This is a game we play at large circle or group time. The teacher says, I'm going to say a sound - raise your hand and when I call on you, tell me a word that begins with the m sound. Children's answered with meatball, mom, money, make up, etc. Begin this game with common sounds like s and t first. Then, use more abstract sounds like "a".
2. Identify self by sound. If your name begins with s-please stand up -Steven. Etc.
3. Can you think of a word that ends with "m" - room - ham - etc.
Lesson Presentation:
1. T. invites child to do the sandpaper letter work. T and C. walk to the shelf to get the material. The teacher carries the tray to the table. T. sits on C. dominant side.
2. T. places the tray in the upper left corner of table and takes 3 sandpaper letters out (1 - vowel and 2 consonant) and places in a stacked ( make sure that the cards can be flipped over easily and facing the right way. Also that the vowel is placed on top.)
3. T. sensitize fingers. C. is asked to do the same.
4. T. flips over the first sandpaper letter.
5. T. says, "This letter makes the sound "a" T. looks at the C. and shows two fingers - "Watch" T. traces (with two fingers) the letter starting from the top and going counter clockwise and with the last stroke says "a"
6. Repeat step 5 and remember to say "a" on the last stroke.
7. T. ask C. to trace the sandpaper letter . C. traced the letter "a" with two fingers, going counter clockwise, and says "a" at the end of the stroke. C. traces and sounds out letter twice. *Note if C. traces from the bottom -Then, T. traces again and says "watch" - Have C. see month and watch how the T. traces the letter. Trace counter clockwise and say "a" at the end of the stroke.
8. C. repeats step 7 and says "a" on the very last stroke.
9. T. turns card over and places it in the discard pile to the bottom right of the table.
10.Repeat steps 4-9 placing the second card in the discard pile, but the third card slide over to the left when you're done tracing it and saying it's sound.
11 .Cards in the discard pile flip over to be facing up so they are going across the bottom of the table.
12. Do the 2nd Period Lesson starting with the last card that you worked with. Have C. trace and say sounds. Stay in 2nd Period Lesson until the C. knows the sounds.
13.T. says, point to letter that makes the sound "b" C. points and says "b" T. continues this for the rest of the letters. Note: Once C. has traced letters correctly, emphasize the sounds and repeat this procedure three times.
14.T. asks C. to put their nose on a letter, elbow, and finger. * Note during 2nd period Lesson T. may need to make corrections. Do not move to 3r Period Lesson if C. doesn't know all the sounds.
15.Third Period Lesson in sequence - What sound does this letter make, (starting off with the last letter you left off with)
16. T and C. plays knock- knock - C. knocks, T says "Who's There. C. flips letter over and then, says the sound of that letter.
Note: If the C. shows no fatigue, continue with remaining letters on the tray and return letters that C. has done back to the tray. As a rule leave the vowel in but if there is a problem with a letter keep that letter in the pile of three letters.
Additional Exercises
